PERSONAL BLOG ABOUT
My dad, alcohol, and me
Welcome to "Unapologetically Sarah," a blog shining light on the often overlooked perspectives of those affected by alcohol addiction. As an adult child of an alcoholic parent, I intimately understand the challenges and trauma addiction can inflict upon families and loved ones. By candidly sharing my own experiences and inviting others to do the same, it is my hope we can break down stigmas and feel less alone on this difficult journey.
A core goal of this blog is to bridge the gap between families affected by alcoholism and the alcoholic loved one, promoting greater empathy and understanding between both sides. Through vulnerable storytelling and expert insights, my mission is to increase awareness, compassion, and understanding around this complex issue. I aim to highlight perspectives from those supporting and living with addiction alike, uniting our voices to encourage openness, compassion and eventual healing.
In addition to personal narratives, I will feature interviews with professionals across disciplines offering research and guidance on dealing with the psychological effects of alcoholism. My goal is to provide a thoughtful look at all facets of this epidemic, highlight available resources, and open meaningful dialogue. It is my belief that in sharing stories and truths from multiple viewpoints, we can gain deeper wisdom, nurture vital relationships, and take steps in the direction of individual and collective healing. This blog is for all those seeking solace, hope, and understanding amidst the devastation of addiction. You are not alone.
Hi, My name is Sarah Drage and I am a campaigner, TEDx speaker, podcast host, and ambassador for NACOA (The National Association for Children of Alcoholics).
I am also an adult child of an alcoholic parent, and I have experienced firsthand the complex dynamics and challenges within a family impacted by alcoholism. After years of living in the shadows, I am now committed to shining a light on this issue in the hopes that my story and insights can support others.
I regularly speak publicly about my experience and have featured across various platforms including, British Vogue, TEDx, The Telegraph, BBC News, and many more.
"When you love someone addicted to alcohol who isn’t ready to accept help, it’s like watching them drown in front of your very eyes. You're powerless to do anything, unable to reach in and pull them out."
— Sarah Drage
I co-host a podcast with my good friend Amy about the complexities and challenges of being adult children of alcoholics. When we first met we connected instantly and spent 2 hours talking over the phone, often repeating “Oh my goodness me too.” After years of feeling unheard and invalidated it is truly liberating to be able to speak so openly and freely. I often compare it to speaking a language that we only understand. We shared so many similarities, both our dads died from alcohol addiction, and they were both called Steve!
